Do you believe?

...

This is a very broad topic for me, as I keep coming across people that have a lack of belief.....about many things.  One of the most crucial things that I observe is that they have a general lack of belief in themselves.

Did they have a belief in themselves at one time?

I believe in many things...

Making a difference.
Loving others.
Working hard.
Trusting people.
That the Oilers will one day.................win more than they lose!
That being positive is better than being negative.
Myself.

So what actually drives our beliefs?

Is it because someone else has been there, done that?.....than we believe?
Do we have to see it to believe it?

What about the Law of Attraction?   Many people believe in this.....and many people don`t.
Do you believe that our ACTIONS will attract things in our life?  Both good and bad!

If we don`t understand something, we generally don`t believe in it.  Too bad, really!

Sometimes you just have to believe.......things will get better.

The classic tune "Don`t Stop Believin, by the band Journey, really speaks to this message.
.....mid way through the song it says...

"Some will win, Some will lose
Some were born to sing the blues
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'"

Here's my interpretation of the song.

Sometimes you will succeed and sometimes you will fail.   We all experience this in our life.
However, some people will complain about  the failures and forget to acknowledge the successes in life. (the small wins)
As for the movie never ending, it is life's journey.  It ain't over, til it's over, so enjoy the ride.
Regardless of what happens don't stop believing that you will win more times than you will fail.  Hold onto that thought and never give up!

On a final note, I want to leave you with an inspiring message when you feel that you lack opportunity or hope.   Don`t Stop Believing!

Reminds me of a quote by one of my favourites "You are what you believe yourself to be" (Paul Coelho).

Mike! Well done! This is right up my alley and very very true! I hope it touches someone this morning and assists them with looking at their current path in a different light, and will maybe Google "Law of Attraction" if they have never heard of it!! You may have just changed the slope of someone's line....;) Chandelle

Thanks Mike. I never thought about the song before, and now you have given it meaning to me forever - a great meaning. I never miss your blog; keep up the good work.

Mike, You have definitely posed lots of question on belief here....all deserving a look in their own right.

I think most people generally believe themselves....until an event or tragedy takes place. Then the demons of self doubt takes over....disbelieve ensures, some form of meltdown may occur. Some bounce back quickly, some take longer, slowly but surely, and start believing in themselves again. Some even take drastic measure – suicide. In the healing process, some come out better people, better believers. Some lose their beliefs totally and unfortunately depression may take over, substance abuse, alcoholism... etc. How do i know? Been there, done that, bounced back, slowly but surely...one of the fortunate ones....and embracing life with sheer gusto.

I think the important question to ask is what causes some people to be believers and others disbelievers....is it environmental, social, cultural, faith, emotional and physical well being, or even emotional versus intelligent quotient? Having asked the question, I think there are too many variables to come to a definitive answer. As a child, teenager, daughter, lover, employers and an employee....my belief in myself, my self worth, is always at its pinnacle when there is positive feedback from those that matter to me.

You ask what drives our beliefs. Again i think the same variables apply. But culture and faith play important functions here too. We believe in god because of faith...that has been instilled in most of us since birth and in some instances, some find god though an event that can’t be explained. So no, we don’t have to see it to believe.

Some religions are big on the law of attraction....Hinduism and Buddhism for example...karma...what goes around comes around...doing good will reward you with goodness, if not this life, the next life. These beliefs can also make men (a generic term I am using to define the human race) complacent - If they don’t do good this lifetime, they have the next, and the next....to achieve what they need, believe. It makes the poor in those societies BELIEF that it is their karma to be poor; the rich to be arrogant... that they must have suffered in their previous lives that therefore are afforded a better economic standing in this lifetime.

The argument continues but...you are right in saying... Sometimes you just have to believe.......things will get better.

I paused and thought about your comment "because somebody has been there before we believe"

But what about all those who enter new territory? Do they believe based on past success in a similar area, or do they have more in their lives inspiring them on to succeed?

I 'believe' you are on to something!

G’day Blaine

You are right to question my opinion...what about those who enter new territory? Who have never been there? Again you aptly hit on possible explanations.....maybe that is what inspired Columbus on his quest, for example....their own previous successes or that of their mentors (such as Vasco da Gama) .... or driven by fame and fortune that the discovery might bring.

*Smile* You are on to something here yourself sir....
